This course is intended for software engineers who will undertake software development within an IEC 61508-compliant process, and their direct managers.

It will explain how compliance is achieved, and how the necessary activities contribute to safety. This course will focus principally on the specific activities required to achieve the necessary Safety Integrity Level (SIL) compliance. In particular, the course will cover the following areas:

  • What is functional safety?
  • Contribution of software to risk
  • Software development lifecycles in IEC 61508
  • Requirements and Specifications
  • Design and development
  • Use of software tools in development
  • Verification and validation
  • Tailoring practices to achieve IEC 61508 requirements
  • Using off-the shelf software

At the end of this course, attendees should have a high-level overview of software development under IEC 61508 and be able to interpret and understand the requirements of the standard.
