Developing a Safety Case

This one day course introduces the concept and structure of a Safety Case.

Particular emphasis on describing why and where Safety Case approaches have been introduced, illustrated through case studies from a range of high hazard industries.

The main structural elements of a Safety Case are then described in more detail, including the Equipment/Operation Scope, Risk Assessment, Safety Management System, Hazard Log, and Emergency/Contingency arrangements. The concept of ‘tolerable risk’, the As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) principle and setting of safety targets are introduced and discussed. Practical illustrations are then given as to how Safety Cases are constructed, used and maintained, providing an appreciation of the whole process for anyone involved in the development or management of a Safety Case.
